Aurora Australis - Looking South from our drive way at  7 Costelloe St Wagin.  Had been out for tea at Katanning and whilst travelling home  this sky was in the rear view of the car all the way home whilst travelling north back to Wagin. When we arrived home I set the camera up on tripod and took ONE image on film.  Never saw the image until years later when I scanned the negative strip containing this image.

Can you work out  the date this photo was taken -  As the technology of the day did not have XIF data embedded in film, I am uncertain of the actual date this shot was taken.  The facts that I know are, it was taken from Wagin looking south.  Wagin is 117.3418 degrees east and 33.3102 degrees south.  The time would have been approx 1am,  from the star positions I estimate this makes the month approx February to March.   I don't believe I can  confirm the actual year by the data in the image, but other photos on the film strip suggest the early 80's.  If you know how to confirm the date any further, please let me know.

Feedback  from the iceinspace forum  has narrowed the date  to 18/02/1983. You can see the same Aurora as seen from Albany at this web site.    http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/faculty/~mclark/public_html/au18283.htm
